This acrylic painting, Harlem Renaissance, was created by one of our Outreach students at the James River Detention Center (JRDC), where art instructors work with youth to teach various art techniques and to encourage art as a positive way to express yourself. The artist, working alongside his instructor, wanted to create a jazz city, inspired by his mother’s love for that style of music. He added movement to the buildings and used color to create the feel of jazz while also incorporating more obvious nods to the genre and its time. He has music notes coming out of the chimneys and stated that he felt there needed to be a pink car in there too, so he added one. This young man, who had never done art previous to the Center’s Outreach program, found creating the piece fulfilling and it allowed him to recognize his own potential for creativity and creative expression. He hopes to be able to sell this piece to have money to help himself get a head start post-JRDC and also to be able to help his mother out. The diptych consists of two panels each 30" W x 40" H.
