NEW! Gypsy Jazz & Hot Swing - Rhythm Guitar Workshop

The world of Gypsy Jazz and swing guitar is a fascinating one. It is where the guitar serves as both the pulse of the music, and the harmonic tapestry. Join jazz musician and anthropologist, Thomas Wakefield, in exploring the approaches to jazz rhythm guitar performance, and understanding its role in group settings from duo to big band. Guitarist for the group, Gypsy Roots, Thomas will demonstrate the role of “la pompe” – the pulse, in the Gypsy approach to jazz music while explaining is historical and cultural context. Other styles included in the workshop will include Gypsy jazz influenced Latin rhythms and American big band swing guitar. Participants will learn a variety of strumming patterns and techniques as well as chord shape and progressions they can apply to a variety of popular music and jazz standards. A basic knowledge of chords and music reading will be helpful but not necessary.

NEW! Uke-A-Rama - Introductory Workshop on the Ukulele

“Uke can do it!” Welcome to the fun, highly portable, and easily accessible world of the ukulele. Musician and anthropologist, Thomas Wakefield, will take you on a journey to discover the ukulele, and your inner “uke-ness.” The workshop will delve into the history and culture of the ukulele and basic musicianship and techniques for creating music with this fantastic instrument. Basic chord shapes and strumming as well as melodic single note playing will be covered. A basic knowledge of music reading will be helpful but not necessary.
