NEW! Advanced Pine Needle Coiling

Students with knowledge of pine needle basket coiling will explore more techniques and styles including freeform designs; teneriffe centers; using open centers; fagotting stitches; lids with pine cone knobs; inserting beads and other embellishments; and learn more hints and tips for creating a neat finished work. Students should bring a basket “bottom” already started and at least 2-3 inches in diameter as well as their own supply of pine needles, sewing needles, threads, etc. Students will be provided with other needed supplies to demonstrate advanced techniques.

Pine Needle Basket Coiling

Learn to use long pine needles, thread and sewing needles to create an amazing coiled basket that is a true work of art. Different methods to start a basket, how to incorporate simple designs and a variety of stitches will be discussed from a simple stitch to a V- stitch to back stitch.

NEW! Wet Felting: Wool Scarf*
Magi Shapiro
Delve into soft, colored wool slivers, yarns and curly wool locks that will be used to design a beautiful wool scarf using the wet felting technique. Through wet felting, wool fibers are bonded together into a single textile. At the end of the workshop, students will have completed a piece they can enjoy indefinitely. Skills learned in this class can later be used to create other scarves or to build a wool textile to be sewn into a bigger project. * This physically active workshop requires students to stand for a lengthy time. Students must be able to stand for long lengths of time and are encouraged to wear comfortable shoes for such reason.

Batiks for You
Verlane Mack
Learn all the basics of batik, resist, tools and process from design to wax painting to dyeing and wax removal. Students will be introduced to crayon batik, traditional and untraditional forms of resist, and a variety of wax applications. The project will be a multi-color batik fabric that can either be stapled to stretcher bars and hung on a wall or can be sewn into a throw pillow, clothing or a quilt. Students will gain the skills and knowledge necessary to make more complicated projects at home. Bring images, design inspiration or just a creative imagination!

Tunisian Crochet
Claudette Arnold
Explore another facet of the art of crochet. Tunisian (also known as “Afghan Stitch”) is the chameleon of crochet – the technique has its own characteristics, but can have the same look of regular crochet or replicate the knit and purl stitch. Students will learn the basics allowing them to create anything from a sweater to a shawl to an afghan. Prerequisite: Knowledge of basic crochet stitches. Student supplies skein of worsted weight yarn in a light color and a Tunisian hook size K.

Silk Scarf Painting
Celeste Miller
Learn how to paint beautiful silk scarves using the popular French Serti Technique. After doing a practice piece, students will create two stunning silk scarves (8”x54”) to accessorize their wardrobe. No skills needed! Bring an old shirt or apron to class to wear and some newspaper.
